Mission Statement

UNDP is the UN's global network, working with partners in 166 countries, helping them build and share solutions to the challenges of globalization and human development.

UNDP calls for enlarging people's choices and building their capabilities to live a long and healthy life, have access to knowledge, enjoy a decent standard of living and participate in the life of their community and the decisions that affect their lives.

UNDP works to promote sustainable human development in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals as the international community’s global development agenda. It does so by supporting UNDP’s priorities in poverty alleviation, promoting democratic governance and human rights, combating HIV/AIDS and other epidemiological development threats, promoting sustainable environmental and energy policies, as well as preventing conflict and assisting in post-conflict recovery.

Inclusion and equity are some of the hallmarks of the human development conceptual framework pioneered by the UNDP renowned global Human Development Reports, published annually since 1990. The Reports are helping to generate lively debates around the policies and actions needed to accelerate human development and achieve the MDGs.

In each country office, the UNDP Resident Representative normally also serves as the Resident Coordinator of development activities for the United Nations system as a whole. Through such coordination, UNDP seeks to ensure the most effective use of UN and international aid resources.

Our Work in Serbia

In Serbia, UNDP programme operates through the Country Office in Belgrade and the project offices in Vranje, Southern Serbia and Novi Pazar, South West Serbia.

Our objectives for the country are outlined in the Country Programme Document (CPD), signed with the Government of Serbia in January 2005. This document is accompanied by its implementation plan - Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP), which has been designed together and approved by the Government in July 2005.

There are three objectives for the period 2005-2009:

• Efficient, Accountable and People-Cantered Public Sector
• Strengthened Rule of Law and Equal Access to Justice
• Increased Capacity to Promote Sustainable Development.

From these objectives, five thematic areas of our assistance have been formulated:

1. Institutional Development
   
2. Rule of Law
3. Poverty Reduction and Economic Development
4. Decentralization and Local Development
5. Human Security.

For the success of its ongoing and future activities in Serbia UNDP relies on the strong relationship with its partners, their commitment and contribution. Our extensive and substantive network of partners includes the government, local authorities, international community, civil society, non-governmental organizations and private sector.

We base our partnerships on: common vision of Serbia's future development, understanding of development priorities facing the country, belief in the importance of sustainable development initiatives, public-private partnerships and joint action of UN agencies.
