UNAIDS is a co-sponsored programme of the UN, constituted under a 1994 resolution by the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It was created in response to concerns that international efforts to combat HIV/AIDS had been too fragmented and health-centred, leading to the need for a more coherent and broad-based UN system response. UNAIDS operations commenced in 1996. Its core mandate is to "Be the advocate for global action on the epidemic. It leads, strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic." UNTG/ UNAIDS Theme Group in Serbia is contributing, in complementarity with individual UNTG member agencies response, and in partnership with Republican AIDS Commission in Serbia, Institutes of Public Health, and local NGO's, to the design, set up and coordination of sustainable and affordable national/republican response to HIV/AIDS challenges. This has been developed in line with the global initiatives set out in the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS (UNGASS) declaration on Commitment on HIV/AIDS and Millennium Development Goals, endorsed by Serbia to enhance the overall country response on HIV/AIDS The expected results of such partnership are: timely and efficient implementation of Republican AIDS Strategy, monitoring and evaluation of overall HIV response improved, capacities of the Republican AIDS Commission in Serbia strengthen, improved community mobilization of people living with HIV/AIDS
