  • The United Nations agencies' interventions in the field of social inclusion, employment and education aim to advance the status of persons with disabilities in Serbia and improve their quality of living.
  • This year the Government ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Law on Employment & Professional Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities.
  • Nevertheless, the position of persons with disabilities remains precarious in Serbia as only 13% have the opportunity to work, 70% live in poverty, and 51% have only elementary or no formal education. Although the World Health Organization estimates that persons with disabilities represent 10% of the population - or 500,000 - 800,000 people in Serbia - they are rarely seen and do not have the opportunity to participate in social, economic and political life.
  • Youth Employment Fund, in cooperation with the National Employment Service and Ministry of Economy & Regional Development. The Fund will provide support for employment of vulnerable youth - including persons with disabilities. Youth Employment Fund will support employers who are interested in providing work placement for youth with lower education levels and persons with disabilities .
  • Moreover, the Fund will also support persons with disabilities and other vulnerable youth who are interested in starting their own business or obtaining training which will help improve their employability.
  • Its total value is 3.8 million USD (provided by the MDG Achievement Fund and Government of Serbia), and it is part of the Joint UN Programme on Youth Employment & Migration. ILO is currently working with Serbian Employers' Association and representative trade unions on awareness-raising on employment capabilities of persons with disabilities among both the employers and their employees;
  • UNDP is supporting the Social Innovations Fund), which has helped to enrich the community-based and social welfare services for persons with disabilities. Over the last 6 years, thanks to support from the European Union, the Social Innovations Fund supported over 230 projects throughout Serbia, including daycare centers and other facilities benefiting persons with disabilities and their families.
  • UNICEF is supporting education reform through support to teachers in school and pre-school institutions aimed at ensuring the respect and realization of the rights of all children, including the right of children with disabilities to be protected from discrimination.
  • Over 1,000 of children with disabilities in Serbia do not live in a family but in large residential institutions. Thanks to support from the European Union, UNICEF is supporting the integration of these children into biological or foster families, as well as the creation of smaller residential centers which can provide more individualized care and enrichment to children.
  • ILO and UNDP are supporting the Global Compact companies who are interested in engaging with persons with disabilities within their CSR work. While the activities of these companies vary significantly - from building playgrounds for children with disabilities to improving the accessibility of offices & services - they share a common interest in working with persons with disabilities. ILO is working with a group of Global Compact members to develop a disability-oriented training for their Human Resources officers on how to recruit and hire the persons with disabilities as their staff.
  • In a show of our continuous commitment, we are pleased to have had the opportunity to work with the National Bank, Moj Stocic project and the Faculty of Architecture on putting together this exhibition. With our appreciation to Erste Bank who have supported this partnerships, I declare the exhibition open, and invite you all to support this valuable work in the future.
