In addition to the work of the World Health Organization (WHO), a special focus on supporting the adoption of healthy lifestyles by youth in Serbia has been adopted both by UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
In particular, one of the priority areas of these agencies' support to Serbia has been to reverse increasing trends in risk taking behavior among youth, primarily related to reproductive and sexual health, substance use and violence.
Further, support to Serbia has also included expanding the limited availability and improving the quality of social services to address these issues, whilst addressing significant disparities in youth access to health, education and protection services.
UNICEF has also focused on increasing capacities of the primary health care system to respond comprehensively to adolescent health needs. Work with civil society aims to strengthen capacity to provide education, counseling and other preventive services for adolescents most vulnerable to HIV, through outreach and peer-education programmes.
